An Internship at Eidos-Sherbrooke

Tell us about you! Introduce you in a couple of sentences.

My name is Guillaume Souque and I am currently a fourth year student at Polytechnique Montréal.

What are you studying?

I’m studying Software engineering

What made you choose Eidos-Sherbrooke?

One of the main reasons that made me choose Eidos-Sherbrooke was the possibility of participating in a project when it was just starting out. Participating in the project from the start, right from the design phase, was an excellent experience.

What was your role at Eidos-Sherbrooke?

I participated in the “multinode” game engine project within the Eidos-Sherbrooke teams as a General Programmer during my 8 months of internship.

What’s the best thing/lesson your learned during your internship?

Starting out in a small team allowed me to be “hands on” and tackle many aspects related to the development of technologies and video games.

What’s a thing you accomplished during your internship that you’re proud of?

Actively participate in the development of the project even as an intern. I really felt like I was contributing to the project in the long term.

Tell us about you! Introduce you in a couple of sentences.

Hello! I’m Cristian and I’m currently studying Software Engineering at Concordia. I like to program all sorts of things in my free time and I’m also really passionate about low-level hardware. I am currently working with the Space Concordia team to launch a satellite in the Spring of 2022. I like playing MOBAs, co-op RPGs and shooter games in my spare time.

What are you studying?

I’m in my fourth year of Software Engineering in the general program. I haven’t yet picked a particular study topic in Software because there are too many to choose from!

What made you choose Eidos-Sherbrooke?

I previously worked as a web developer but I have always been passionate about game programming. I thought I should apply to see if I would be hired and it turns out I did. I really enjoyed my time here!

What was your role at Eidos-Sherbrooke?

I was assigned as a Generalist Programmer for the voxel team at Eidos-Sherbrooke. I helped add voxel destruction and other cool features to our project.

What’s the best thing/lesson your learned during your internship?

I learned to work with a game engine and new code versioning tools like Perforce. Most of all, I learned what it’s like to work together with my teammates, and how much more we can accomplish when we combine our efforts.

What’s a thing you accomplished during your internship that you’re proud of?

DESTRUCTION!!! I was so proud when I managed to implement destructible voxel objects. I felt very accomplished when I submitted the last patch that fixed the bug that I was stuck on for 2 days! I really felt like I had learned new knowledge and tools and it showed in the worked I did.

Any advice for students who would like to pursue a career in Video games?

I would say that you should definitely give it a go. If you feel passionate about creating video games, I would encourage you to pursue it and see what the field is like for yourself. You can always switch to something else if it’s not for you. Remember that it takes much than enjoying playing video games, you need a specific curiosity to stand out in the field. However, do not let what I said discourage you from trying.
